Kym Whitley Says One Decision Cost Her a Spot in the Friday Franchise
Many fans of the Friday franchise may not know the story behind why actress Kym Whitley did not return for Friday After Next.
Kym, who portrayed Auntie Suga in Next Friday, recently shared her side of the situation and explained that her departure was not due to a lack of interest in the franchise. Instead, she says it came down to a scheduling conflict that left her facing a difficult professional decision.
According to Kym, she received notice about the production of Friday After Next after she had already committed to another project, Deliver Us from Eva. Since both productions were scheduled to film around the same time, fulfilling both commitments proved challenging.
Kym says she approached Ice Cube and asked whether accommodations could be made so she could participate in both projects. However, according to her account, the request was not accepted, and she was told she would need to choose between the two opportunities.
Faced with that decision, Kym says she chose to honor the contract she had already signed. From her perspective, maintaining her professional commitment was the right course of action, even though it meant stepping away from a role that fans had come to enjoy.
As a result, the character was recast, and the role was filled by Sommore, who played Cookie in the film. The change introduced a new dynamic to the story, while Kym moved forward with her other acting project.
Kym also claimed that the situation affected her relationship with Ice Cube and that the two reportedly did not communicate for several years afterward. While neither side may view the events exactly the same way, her comments have reignited discussion among longtime fans of the franchise.
The story highlights a challenge many actors face in the entertainment industry: balancing loyalty to successful projects with the responsibility to honor existing contracts and career commitments. In situations where scheduling conflicts arise, there is often no perfect solution.
What do you think? Should Kym have prioritized returning to the Friday franchise, or did she make the most professional decision by honoring a commitment she had already made?
